Our Firm

The Hellenkamp Law Firm is a boutique trial practice firm, with expertise in Real Estate, Business and Intellectual Property Litigation. Our focus is to pursue our clients’ rights efficiently and cost-effectively. We are creative in our attempts to resolve disputes through negotiation, mediation or arbitration: but if a reasonable settlement can’t be reached, you can rely upon our experience and zealous trial advocacy in the courtroom.

The Firm represents investors, brokers, developers, contractors and homeowners in all aspects of real estate and business litigation, and in all levels of complexity. Our attorneys have extensive experience litigating all types of claims in commercial, industrial, retail and residential matters, including multi-family residential projects, and complex landlord tenant disputes.

We also handle complex business, contract and intellectual property disputes, from contract interpretation to license negotiations.

Attorneys

terryTerry J. Hellenkamp

Terry Hellenkamp received his bachelor of arts from Washington State University in 1982 and his juris doctorate from the University of San Diego in 1986. He is a member of the California State Bar and the U.S. District Courts, Southern District of California, Central District of California, and Northern District of California. Mr. Hellenkamp is a member of the San Diego County Bar Association (Past Member, Speaker’s Committee) and the North San Diego County Bar Association, the North County Voluntary Settlement Panel, the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association, and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He is a past Program Committee Member for the Lawyers Club, and past member of the Community Associations Institute and Board of Directors, Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation.

Mr. Hellenkamp is a member of the State Bar of California, Real Property, Business Law and Litigation sections.  Mr. Hellenkamp has appeared Pro Hac Vice in complex business litigation matters in the courts of the States of Washington, Colorado and Florida.

Mr. Hellenkamp has been rated Martindale-Hubbell® A-V Preeminent Rating for over 16 years.

Prior to forming The Hellenkamp Law Firm in 2011, Mr. Hellenkamp was a partner with the law firm of Wirtz Hellenkamp, LLP, commencing in 2002. Mr. Hellenkamp began his career at Kolodny & Pressman, APC, of San Diego, California. While at Kolodny & Pressman, APC, Mr. Hellenkamp tried many real estate and business litigation cases until he left the firm as a partner in 2002 to form Wirtz Hellenkamp, LLP.

As the principal trial attorney at The Hellenkamp Law Firm, Mr. Hellenkamp brings 25 years of trial experience to the firm.  He has litigated cases involving real estate, complex business, land use, insurance coverage, construction, ADA compliance, antitrust and trade regulation, and numerous commercial landlord/tenant matters.

Amy Hellenkamp, Attorney

Ms. Hellenkamp’s practice focuses primarily on general business litigation and intellectual property litigation. In addition, her practice includes counseling on many types of intellectual property issues, including trademark, trade secret, and copyright issues. She also is experienced in negotiating and drafting agreements relating to technology and intellectual property licenses, services, and purchases.

Prior to forming The Hellenkamp Law Firm, Ms. Hellenkamp was a partner with Wirtz Hellenkamp, LLP.  Prior to her practice with Wirtz Hellenkamp, LLP,  Ms. Hellenkamp was associate general counsel for Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in Carlsbad, California. Prior to that, she was an associate at Cooley Godward, LLP, and at Lyon & Lyon, LLP, focusing on intellectual property litigation and patent prosecution in the area of biotechnology. Ms. Hellenkamp received her juris doctorate from the University of San Diego School of Law (J.D. 1996), where she graduated cum laude, Order of the Coif, and was a member of law review. She received her bachelor of science in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University (B.S. 1988).

Ms. Hellenkamp is a member of the State Bar of California and is admitted to practice in the U.S. Federal District Courts for the Southern, Central and Northern Districts of California. She also is admitted to the bar of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Timothy V. Mahar, Attorney

Mr. Mahar is a litigation associate attorney at the Hellenkamp Law Firm, specializing in real estate and business litigation. He has extensive law and motion experience and has served as second-chair in lengthy jury trials. Prior to joining The Hellenkamp Law Firm, Mr. Mahar served as a Staff Attorney at the Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers where he obtained extensive bench trial experience in Juvenile Dependency Court. He also served as an Associate Attorney at George J. West & Associates in Providence, Rhode Island.

Mr. Mahar is licensed to practice law in Rhode Island, Massachusettes and California. He is also certified to practice in the United States District Court for the Districts of Rhode Island, the Central District of California and the Southern District of California. 

Mr. Mahar is an alumni of Roger Williams University School of Law and the University of Connecticut. While at Roger Williams he served as a intern for Metlife Auto and Home Corporate Counsel, a Summer Associate for Gunning & LaFazia, Inc., and a student intern for Professor’s Jessica Hynes, Cecily Banks and Mark Sjoberg.  Mr. Mahar was also the Student Editor for the ABA Guide to Construction Law, Second Edition, under the supervision of the firm Little Medeiros Kinder Bulman & Whitney in Providence, Rhode Island. During his time at Roger Williams he earned a CALI Award in Legal Methods II, and also served as the Graduate Assistant Coach for the Women’s and Men’s Varsity Swim Teams. 

Prior to law school Mr. Mahar graduated as an Honors Scholar from the University of Connecticut. He was also a member of the Varsity Swim Team, earning All-Big East Academic Honors and the Captain’s Award in 2006. He also served as the President of the West Campus Area Council and a voting member of the UConn Law Society and Honors Society.

Outside of practicing law, Mr. Mahar is an Ironman Triathlete and member of the Fuel Belt Race Team.
